8 days in Central Europe: Budapest, Vienna and the Salzkammergut lakes

This site is the day-by-day plan of a real trip: four friends, eight days, two capitals and the lakes of the Salzkammergut in Austria. An AI agent wrote the plan and kept it up to date on the road. The site is also a working example of tripwright, the open-source trip planner built from this way of planning.

This is the plan as it stood at the end, last generated on 31 Oct 2026 at 14:03 (Vienna time).

How to read a day page

1 · Key timesThe fixed times of the day come first: trains, buses and timed tickets. They all show "Past" now, because the trip is over.
2 · Places to goThe main plan in time order, with the local name and a Google Maps link for each place.
3 · TimelineOne column per person or group, with the other plans for the day side by side. Tap a block to see its details.
4 · Further downTransport, a map, photos of each place, other options by time of day, a plan for rain and the transport costs.

Words on the pages: "I", "me" and "the user" mean the traveler who planned the trip with the AI agent; "companions" or "friends" are the other three. Codes such as D-44 or Q-07 are decision and question numbers; the Decisions page explains each one. See About this page for more.

Day 1Oct 25 (Sun) · Pace: relaxed

Budapest day 2 · Fisherman's Bastion and Gravity bouldering in the morning, local food at noon, Pest in the afternoon, back to the venue for the dinner in the evening

In the afternoon walk along the river over the Chain Bridge to Pest, go up St. Stephen's Basilica, and ride the old M1 metro to Heroes' Square for the sunset. Back at the hotel to rest, then on to the venue for the dinner. Nothing is planned after the dinner. Taste Asian is dropped.

Vienna → Bad Ischl · Belvedere, nearby churches, Naschmarkt; leave at 17:57 (originally 16:57)

Take EC 140 in the morning to Vienna, store the suitcases and go to Upper Belvedere (12:00 timed ticket), then see the two small churches on Rennweg next door, pass the Karlskirche for its exterior, have lunch at Naschmarkt, take IC 742 at 16:57 to Bad Ischl, arriving at 20:00. This leaves about 1 h more than the earlier 15:57 train. The latest train you asked about: the last one that reaches Bad Ischl the same day is IC 840 leaving Hbf at 20:57, arriving only at 00:21 the next day, not recommended. Hbf shows no "16:50" train; the closest is this one. This train is fixed (decision D-44).

  • 08:30EC 140 leaves Budapest-Keleti, arrives Wien Hbf 11:20 (direct, ticket bought)
  • 11:20Arrive Wien Hbf; leave the two small suitcases in a locker on the lower level (pay on the spot; contactless bank cards only)

Oct 28 (Wed) · Pace: medium

Lake District day 1 · Wolfgangsee: first to St. Gilgen, boat to St. Wolfgang, back for bouldering before the rain, hotpot in the evening (changed on the morning of 10-28)

10-28 change (decision D-59): No cable car. Rescheduled at 11:18 (lunch already eaten): first a walk by the river in Bad Ischl, then the 546 at 12:12 to St. Wolfgang for the church and a walk along the lake, boat to St. Gilgen at 14:05, the 150 back at 15:08, arriving in Bad Ischl at 15:45; 4 people go bouldering at K³ until 17:45, buy groceries at EUROSPAR before 18:45, then back at the lodging to cook hotpot. The original one-sentence plan below is kept for reference.

A full day on Wolfgangsee, with the return to Bad Ischl pushed back until after dinner: in the morning, the pilgrimage church and Pacher Altar in St. Wolfgang, the White Horse Inn and the lakeside; the 11:05 boat to Fürberg, then a 25′ walk along the flat lakeside path to St. Gilgen; lunch at Zur Post at midday; the Zwölferhorn cable car in the afternoon; after coming down, the lakeside and the outside of the Mozart house; dinner in St. Gilgen, the 150 back at 18:34, arriving in Bad Ischl at 19:08; then I go bouldering at K³ while the companions soak in the thermal baths or rest. No hiking this day; the 25′ along the lake is flat. The boat still runs, and the cable car runs until 11/1. The forecast shows showers from the afternoon and heavier rain at night (see "What if it rains"); check the sky when you reach St. Gilgen, and in rain or fog use Plan B (no cable car, back at 13:38). The two days can be swapped depending on the weather: the evening before, look at the forecasts for 10-28 and 10-29 and pick the clear day for the hike.

Fixed point

  • 12:12From Bad Ischl Bahnhof take the 546 direct to St. Wolfgang Markt (12:46); rescheduled at 11:18, lunch already eaten
  • 14:05Boat St. Wolfgang Markt → St. Gilgen 14:45 (runs every day whatever the weather)
  • 15:08From St. Gilgen take the 150 back to Bad Ischl station 15:45 (forecast: light rain from 15:00, rain after 16:00)
  • 19:00EUROSPAR (Grazer Straße 58) closes: leave K³ at 17:45

Recommended set (first timeline set)

Whole group: 11:20 Traun riverside walk (Bad Ischl town center) (Esplanade walk along the Traun); 12:46 St. Wolfgang Pilgrimage Church and Pacher Altar; 13:05 St. Wolfgang town; 14:45 St. Gilgen town and lakeshore; 16:15 K³ climbing gym (bouldering)

Lake District day 2 · All 4 walk the three Gosausee lakes together (took the delayed 541)

We boarded the 541 in Bad Ischl, about 9′ late, and rode to Hallstatt Gosaumühle. Three ways to go, ordered from the most likely and best: ①if the 10:45 542 waited or is also late, we connect, reach Zwieselalmbahn at about 11:10, leave the front lake at 11:45, turn back from the back lake by 14:35 at the latest, be back at 16:52, and reach Bad Ischl, with no last bus and no walking in the dark; ②if the 542 has gone, take a taxi from Gosaumühle straight to the lake (arriving at about 11:30) and be back at 16:52 the same way; ③if no taxi, wait for the 11:45 542, arriving at 12:09, still walk the three lakes, start back from the back lake at 15:00 (15:30 at the latest), take the last bus at 17:47, with the last 24′ of road in the dark. To find the lake, search Google Maps for Gasthof Gosausee. Buy 2 Freizeit-Tickets from the driver when boarding. No cable car, no Hallstatt (D-60, D-62).

Fixed point

  • —Arrive at Hallstatt Gosaumühle (the 541 is about 9′ late): if the 10:45 542 is still there, take it (Plan 1); if it has left, take a taxi from here to Gasthof Gosausee (Plan 2); if not taking a taxi, wait for the 11:45 542 (Plan 3)
  • 14:35(Plans 1 and 2) Latest time to start back from the Hinterer Gosausee, to catch the 16:52 bus
  • 15:00(Plan 3) Start back from the back lake by 15:30 at the latest; if you haven't reached Gosaulacke by 14:00, only go that far, then take the 16:52
  • 16:52From the Zwieselalmbahn stop take the 542 → Gosaumühle 17:17, then the 541 back to Bad Ischl (not the last bus)
  • 17:47Last 542 from the Zwieselalmbahn stop → Steeg/Hallstätter See Traunbrücke 18:19 → 541 back to Bad Ischl; if you miss it, walk 17′ to Hintertal b.Gosau Schmiedweg and take the 18:49 → arrive 19:39

Recommended set (first timeline set)

Whole group: 11:45 Gosausee (front lake to back lake); 13:50 Picnic (bring your own), by the back lake; 14:15 Gosausee (front lake to back lake)

All 4 go to Hallstatt together (the only sunny day), arrive in Vienna 19:03, check in, the "∞" at the Votivkirche, 21:00 Wiener Grill Haus

Today is the only sunny day at the lakes, so all 4 of us go to Hallstatt together, by bus all the way: leave Bad Ischl at 15:56, take IC 743 at Attnang at 17:01, arrive at Wien Hbf at 19:03 (D-66). Evening (D-67, D-70, D-72): first check in at the hostel front desk (4 passports); take a taxi to Votivkirche to see the lit "∞" between the two towers (what the user called "the church with the Möbius strip", from outside only); then a taxi to Hietzing for dinner at Wiener Grill Haus at 21:00 (booked on TheFork); on the way back, buy a 24-hour ticket in WienMobil and take U4 + U1 at 22:33 back to the lodging. The friends skip Swarovski tonight and go tomorrow at 09:00 instead.

Why Hallstatt: at 11:20 the user asked to compare only by reviews, whether or not we had been before. Hallstatt is the most famous World Heritage town in the lake region; on a sunny day you get mountains, lake and reflections, so the payoff is the biggest; the downsides are crowds and commercialization. St. Wolfgang is comfortable and quiet, and its sights are the pilgrimage church and the lakeside. Weather (Open-Meteo 11:20): cloud cover in Hallstatt between 13:00 and 14:00 is 46–51%, turning overcast after 16:00, with light rain around 18:00. Vienna tonight (Open-Meteo 18:4x): 9–10 °C from 19:00 to 23:00, rain probability 0–3%.

Fixed point

  • 15:56(Already left) Bad Ischl bus terminal SV170 → Gmunden 16:33, REX 4415 16:40 → Attnang 16:54, IC 743 17:01 → arrive Wien Hbf 19:03; not taking WESTbahn
  • 19:03Arrive at Wien Hbf; check in at the front desk (4 passports, city tax about €4), ask whether luggage can be stored after check-out
  • 20:10(Actual) Taxi to the Votivkirche, see the "∞" between the two towers (outside only)
  • 20:35Taxi from the Votivkirche (Uber or Bolt, about 15–20′, est. €15–25) to Wiener Grill Haus
  • 21:00Dinner at Wiener Grill Haus (booked on TheFork, 4 people; Hadikgasse 40)
  • 22:33Before boarding, buy a 24-hour ticket on WienMobil (actually not bought, the user said so later; changed to buying it on the morning of 10-31); Hietzing U4 → Karlsplatz 22:44, then U1 back

Recommended set (first timeline set)

Whole group: 11:34 Zauner pastry shop (pastries at Konditorei Zauner (the Empress Sisi one)); 12:55 Hallstatt town; 20:10 Votivkirche (a glowing "∞" light sculpture between the two towers, the "church with a Möbius strip" the user mentioned) (see the glowing "∞" light sculpture between the two towers from outside the Votivkirche); 21:00 Wiener Grill Haus (10-30 dinner, booked for 21:00) (dinner at Wiener Grill Haus (booked on TheFork for 21:00, 4 people))

Vienna · Take it easy on the last day: bouldering at Blockfabrik in the afternoon, two free churches on the metro route (Stephansdom and Peterskirche), Halloween team competition at boulderbar Hannovergasse in the evening, 22:42 to the airport for the night

The last day should be relaxed: on 10-31 at 13:48 the user said that the two climbing gyms should not make them walk that much, that at the gyms the main thing is resting, and that saving money should not be judged by money alone; at 13:51 the 24-hour ticket was bought (D-75). Recommended: in the afternoon climb a while and rest a while at Blockfabrik (big bouldering gym in the 5th district) → at 15:40 take the metro to Stephansplatz and see Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral) and Peterskirche (St. Peter's Church) → at 16:50 take the metro and tram to boulderbar Hannovergasse, sign up for the Halloween team competition at 17:30–17:45, it starts at 18:00, stay until 21:45 → arrive at Hbf at 22:13 to buy the supplement and food → 22:42 Railjet to the airport for the night. Two other plans: skip the churches (stay at Blockfabrik until 16:35, U4 straight through); or go to boulderbar Hbf in the evening (no event, close to Hbf). The D-74 version with daytime walking, a full-trip ticket in the evening and four churches was replaced by this one at 13:54.

Fixed point

  • 17:30Sign up for the Halloween team competition at the boulderbar Hannovergasse front desk (17:30–17:45); it starts at 18:00; if you miss it, climb as usual or watch from the side
  • 21:50Leave boulderbar Hannovergasse by this time at the latest (closes 22:00); line 12 + U4 + U1 to Hbf
  • 22:42Take the Railjet (ÖBB express) from Wien Hbf to the airport, arrives 22:57; or the 22:53 REX → 23:15
  • 23:53Last train to the airport tonight (REX → 00:15); if you miss them all, take the VAB 1 airport bus (23:15, and tomorrow morning 03:15, 03:45)

Recommended set (first timeline set)

Me: 11:40 Som Kitchen (Central Station branch, Thai food) (ate Som Kitchen (Thai food, takeaway) at Hbf with the companions); 14:07 Blockfabrik bouldering gym (climb a bit and rest a bit at Blockfabrik (the big bouldering gym in District 5)); 16:05 Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral) (Stephansdom, right outside the metro exit); 16:28 Peterskirche (St. Peter's Church) (Peterskirche (St. Peter's Church, Baroque), 3′ walk from Stephansdom); 17:15 boulderbar climbing gym (Hannovergasse branch, the first boulderbar) (boulderbar Hannovergasse (the first boulderbar): sign up, watch the Halloween team competition, climb freely)

Companions: 11:40 Som Kitchen (Central Station branch, Thai food) (ate Som Kitchen (takeaway) at Hbf with me)

How this plan was made, and what tripwright is

The plan was not written by hand. The traveler who planned the trip told an AI agent what the group wanted, in chat messages (many of them dictated by voice). The agent kept the plan, the bookings and every decision in a private trip repository. It checked trains and buses in open timetable data, checked the weather forecast, and rebuilt this site after each change. When the weather or a bus changed the day, the agent re-planned and the pages changed with it.

tripwright is the open-source version of this way of planning. It is a service that AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT or Codex connect to over MCP (the Model Context Protocol). In every answer it brings back your preferences and earlier decisions, it looks up transport and says what the data does not cover, and it records why the plan changed. Each person runs their own copy; there is no public service.

The working lists from the trip

During the trip, the home page started with these lists: places to pick, tickets to buy, things to do before a deadline and questions to decide. They are kept here as they were on 31 Oct. The "Done" buttons only mark an item on your own device.

Pick places, tickets and reservations

Pick the places you want first: The "Pick places" page lists 151 places you can go to, with real photos where available. If you do not tap anything, it means "go or not, either is fine". Tap "Want to go" or "Skip" only for places you clearly want or do not want, then tap "Copy for agent" so the agent changes the plan to match your choices.

To do in advance (9 not done)

  • 10-24 You do it yourself: all 4 get the ISIC digital card, keep it on your phone and save a screenshot as backup
You do it yourself · If you don't: the night cruise student ticket only accepts an ISIC or a Hungarian student ID; without one you pay the difference plus a surcharge of 3 times; Fisherman's Bastion, Matthias Church, Gravity, Belvedere, Schönbrunn and others also ask for the card for the student price. In Budapest, all 4 together save about 9,100 Ft (about €23) · Decided to get it (decision D-21); see the discounts page for where an ISIC is accepted
  • 10-24 You do it yourself: confirm in the Kiwi App that the booking number for Wizz flight can be used to check in
You do it yourself · If you don't: it is a self-transfer, so the Kiwi order must allow check-in · old system V-U14; the user said on 10-24 they would do it themselves
  • 10-24 Install and register the apps: ÖBB Tickets (create an account, link a card), BudapestGO, WienMobil; optional Bolt, OÖVV Ticket; download Google offline maps (Budapest, Vienna, Bad Ischl—Hallstatt—Gosau—St. Wolfgang—Altaussee)
4 people · If you don't: you only find out when buying that you need to register and verify an e-mail; no signal in the mountains and in the metro · Only ÖBB Tickets must have a card linked first; BudapestGO needs mobile data; for the buying steps see the "Tickets and reservations" page
  • 10-24 Keep your passport and student ID with you (digital tickets are tied to a person; ticket checks on board and student-price checks at entrances both need ID)
4 people · If you don't: the Wiener Linien 7-day pass, ÖBB tickets and the Kunsthistorisches Museum student price are all checked · On 10-31 the climbing gym's student price needs the student ID; digital tickets are tied to the holder, and ticket checks need the passport
  • 10-24 Pack climbing shoes, hiking shoes, headlamp, trekking poles; bring your student ID
Me · If you don't: 4 bouldering sessions need shoes; sunset is about 16:40–16:56, and coming down late needs a headlamp · Own shoes decided (decision D-19). The user asked on 10-24 for reminders at the time: on the morning of 10-25 remind about the climbing shoes (MAG47); on the evening of 10-28 remind about the headlamp (for Hallstatt on the evening of 10-29)
  • 10-27 Have euro cash ready: about €80—100 per person, of which about €10 in €1 and €2 coins
4 people · If you don't: usually about €50—60: dinner on 10-28 at Gasthof Brunetti takes cash only (about €25), toilets and small change, shops in the mountains; if the host collects the Ortstaxe in cash (about €3.50/person/night, about €11/person for 3 nights), that needs cash too. Keep about €30 more in reserve: if you can't buy a bus ticket on your phone, buy it from the driver (lake-area buses only guarantee cash on board). The Hallstatt ferry takes cash only (not in the plan this time). Bus tickets, cable cars and most restaurants take cards in the app or in the shop; the Wien Hbf lockers take contactless bank cards only; Budapest uses forint, mostly by card · The user on 10-24: no need to handle it, just remind them. The Kofferdepot in Bad Ischl isn't needed this time, so no more €2 coins are needed
  • Evenings of 10-27, 10-28, 10-29 The day before leaving, recheck the 10-28, 10-29 and 10-30 services in ÖBB Scotty / OÖVV (school holidays 10-27 to 11-02)
