Vienna · A relaxed last day: bouldering at Blockfabrik in the afternoon, a metro ride past two free churches, Stephansdom and Peterskirche, then the Halloween team competition at boulderbar Hannovergasse in the evening, and 22:42 to the airport for the night

Oct 31 (Sat) · Hbf → Blockfabrik (5th district) → Old Town (Stephansplatz) → boulderbar Hannovergasse (20th district) → Hbf → airport · Pace: relaxed · Sunset 16:39 · Stay: Vienna Airport (me, overnight); the companions go from Hbf to the airport at midday

Key times

  • 17:30Sign up for the Halloween team competition at the boulderbar Hannovergasse front desk (17:30–17:45), it starts at 18:00; if you miss it, climb as usual or just watch
  • 21:50Latest time to leave boulderbar Hannovergasse (it closes at 22:00), tram 12 + U4 + U1 to Hbf
  • 22:42Take the Railjet (ÖBB express) from Wien Hbf to the airport, arriving 22:57; or the 22:53 REX → 23:15 Buy the airport-section supplement (€2.30, with a 24-hour ticket) in the ÖBB Tickets app
  • 23:53Last train to the airport tonight (REX → 00:15); if you miss all the trains, take the VAB 1 airport bus (23:15, then 03:15 and 03:45 tomorrow morning)

Fixed point

Today's and tomorrow morning's fixed points, in time order (D-75). 1. 17:30–17:45 sign up for the team competition: at the front desk of boulderbar Hannovergasse (the first boulderbar, 20th district). It is fine to miss this one: climb as usual or just watch. Whether signing up costs extra, and whether people who do not compete can still climb as usual, is not stated on the official events page; ask at the front desk. 2. Leave boulderbar Hannovergasse before 21:50: it closes at 22:00. Leave at 21:45, tram 12 + U4 + U1, and arrive at Hbf at 22:13. 3. Train to the airport (Wien Hbf, Vienna Central Station): - 22:42 Railjet (ÖBB express) → 22:57, recommended; - 22:53 REX (regional express) → 23:15; - 23:53 REX → 00:15, the last train tonight. All use the 24-hour ticket plus a €2.30 airport-section supplement (wien.info: people with a multi-day ticket only pay for the "airport → Vienna city limit" section; the same page says the same applies to Railjet). Train times checked on Transitous on 10-31 at 13:50. 4. If you miss all the trains: take the VAB 1 airport bus (Vienna Airport Lines) from Wien Hauptbahnhof Süd (the station on the south side of the Central Station); it runs all night: tonight 23:15 → 23:40, tomorrow morning 03:15 → 03:40 and 03:45 → 04:10 (checked on Transitous on 10-31 at 13:50). The bus does not accept Vienna city tickets; one way costs about €11 (third-party source, official price not found). The U1 metro runs all night on Saturday night. 5. Before 05:45 tomorrow morning: Ryanair online check-in: do it in the Ryanair app, passport details required; after 05:45 (2 hours before departure) you can only check in at the desk, for an extra fee. 6. Document check (only for holders of non-EU/EEA passports): first go to the Ryanair Visa/Document check desk for a stamp, then go through security; without the stamp you cannot board and there is no refund. The desk opens at least 2 hours before departure (no later than 05:45) and closes strictly at 07:05 (40 minutes before departure). Some nationalities can do a "passport verification" during app check-in, and if it passes they do not need to go to the desk. So the safest plan is to be at the desk before 05:45 tomorrow morning (Ryanair Help Centre, search snippet from 10-31; the help page itself would not open, so I did not read it directly). 7. Gate closes 07:15, flight departs 07:45: 07:15 is from an old record and was not rechecked. Terminal: a third-party source says Ryanair check-in is at T1 (Terminal 1) and security and boarding are at T3 (Terminal 3), which is a 2021 statement; go by the boarding pass in the Ryanair app. 8. Overnight at the airport: several third-party sites say the airport operates 24 hours with no curfew, and people staying overnight in public areas are generally not chased away; I found no clear statement on the airport's official site. Airport press release (2021–2022): on the 2nd floor of the T3 arrivals side (outside security) there are 16 Zzzleepandgo sleeping pods, €9/hour, from €48 for the whole night, booked at zzzleepandgo.com; the current price was not found. To spend nothing, find a bench in the T3 arrivals hall. 9. Food: INTERSPAR-pronto (small Spar supermarket) inside Hbf is open every day 06:00–23:00 (three third-party sources agree); after arriving at 22:13, buy dinner, water and tomorrow's breakfast here, as the shops at the airport may not be open at night.

Splitting up and regrouping

  • At midday we eat Som Kitchen together at Hbf, then split up: the companions take REX 7 or a Railjet to the airport (you said the companions' flights need no attention, D-46), and I go to Blockfabrik. We do not meet again after that.
  • Luggage: I have only a carry-on bag, carried all day, and am not going back to the hostel (D-74); both climbing gyms have lockers. Bring your own climbing shoes, do not rent.

Transport

Train times checked on Transitous on 10-31, 13:49–13:52 (unless noted otherwise). - Ticket (D-75): on 10-31 at about 13:50 I bought 24 Stunden Wien in the WienMobil app (24-hour ticket for Vienna city, €9.70), valid until about 13:50 on 11-01, so from the afternoon on I can ride metro, trams and buses freely (bk-1031-wl24). For the airport I only need to pay a supplement for the "airport → Vienna city limit" section, €2.30: first look in the ÖBB Tickets app for Wien Hbf → Flughafen Wien to find this fare (how to select it in the app was not checked); if you cannot find it, use an ÖBB ticket machine or counter inside Hbf, say you have a 24-hour ticket and only want the airport section; if you really cannot get it, buy the €5.50 full-trip ticket (bk-1031-rex7). The digital ticket is tied to me; bring the passport. - Why walking is no longer recommended: the last day should be relaxed, mostly resting at the climbing gyms, and the two gyms are at opposite ends of the city. The 24-hour ticket plus supplement is €12.00, only €0.50 more than two single rides in the afternoon plus the full-trip ticket (about €11.50), and it saves a 30-minute walk (D-75). - Hbf → Blockfabrik: bus 13A (to Skodagasse) → Leibenfrostgasse (bus stop), walk 7′; the 13:51 bus arrives at 14:07, and there is one every few minutes after that. Search Google Maps for Blockfabrik, Schlossgasse 10-12, 1050 Wien. - Blockfabrik → Old Town: walk 5′ to U4 Pilgramgasse (Pilgramgasse station on metro line U4), U4 (to Heiligenstadt) → Karlsplatz (Karlsplatz station), change to U1 (to Leopoldau) for 1 stop → Stephansplatz (Stephansplatz station). Timetables for this leg were not checked separately. - Old Town: Stephansdom is right at the metro exit (search Google Maps for Stephansdom); Peterskirche is a 3′ walk (Peterskirche, Petersplatz, 1010 Wien). - Old Town → boulderbar Hannovergasse: 16:50 U3 (to Simmering) → Wien Mitte-Landstraße (Wien Mitte station) 16:52, 16:54 U4 (to Heiligenstadt) → Friedensbrücke (Friedensbrücke station) 17:00, change to tram 12 (17:05) or tram 5 (17:10) for 2 stops to Wallensteinplatz (Wallenstein Square), walk 7′, arriving about 17:14. The 17:00 tram 5 leaves in the same minute as the U4 arrives, so you will probably miss it. Search Google Maps for boulderbar Hannovergasse, Hannovergasse 21, 1200 Wien. - Skipping the churches: take the U4 at U4 Pilgramgasse at 16:43 or 16:48 straight to Friedensbrücke (16:55 / 17:00, no change), then tram 5 → Wallensteinplatz, walk 7′, arriving around 17:09. - boulderbar Hannovergasse → Hbf: leave at 21:45, walk 6′ to Klosterneuburger Straße/Wallensteinstraße (tram stop), 21:51 tram 12 → Friedensbrücke 21:53, 21:56 U4 (to Hütteldorf) → Schwedenplatz (Schwedenplatz station) 22:00, 22:07 U1 (to Oberlaa) → Hbf 22:13. A later option: leave at 21:51, walk 13′ to Friedensbrücke, 22:04 U4, 22:14 U1 → 22:21 (checked on Transitous on 10-31 at 11:39). - The other plan, to boulderbar Hbf: take U1 from Stephansplatz (to Oberlaa) → the U1 stop (metro station), walk 14′; after climbing, walk about 10′ to Hbf. Search Google Maps for boulderbar Hauptbahnhof, Maria-Lassnig-Straße 18, 1100 Wien. - Hbf → airport: see items 3 and 4 of "Fixed point". From 2026-09-07 the S7 only runs as far as St. Marx and does not stop at Wien Mitte or Rennweg; REX 7 and Railjet still run from Hbf to the airport as usual; the CAT became a bus between Wien Mitte and the airport (wien.info, read on 10-31). The CAT bus and FlixBus both cost more than the train, so skip them. - Companions: Hbf → airport, take REX 7 or a Railjet; buy Wien → Flughafen Wien in the ÖBB Tickets app (pick the train by flight).

Timeline for the day

From morning to night, one column per track for each plan, side by side for comparison. Block height roughly follows duration; when the text does not fit, the block grows taller and the times below move down, so read the hour marks and the times written on the blocks, not the lengths. Blocks with a solid border are fixed (on the timetable or booked); most of the rest are estimates. Click a block for details.

ActivityTransitEatBufferFixed pointReserved Fixed: on the timetable, or already bookedEst.: estimated stay or walking timeTBD: not known yet, a slot is held
Recommended: rest and climb at Blockfabrik → metro to Stephansdom and Peterskirche → Halloween team competition at boulderbar Hannovergasse in the evening → 22:42 Railjet to the airport
On 10-31 at 13:48 the user said the two climbing gyms are far apart and making the user walk that much is not right; the last day should be relaxed, and at the gyms the main thing is resting; "if you only consider saving money, then I think that is wrong"; the user still wants to see the Halloween event, and for the two gyms use these two; at 13:51 the user said the 24-hour ticket was bought (D-75, which replaces D-74's daytime walking and church route). So every leg goes by public transport, with no single walk over about 10 minutes; for churches only Stephansdom (right at the metro exit) and Peterskirche (3-minute walk) are kept, and the Jesuit Church that needs more walking and Ruprechtskirche, which is not open to visitors on Saturdays, are dropped. Train times checked on Transitous on 10-31, 13:49–13:52 (unless noted otherwise).
Skipping the churches: stay at Blockfabrik until 16:35, U4 straight to Friedensbrücke, then change to the tram to Hannovergasse
Choose this one if you are tired and only want to rest at the gym. From Blockfabrik to Hannovergasse, take one U4 ride with no change, then tram 5 for 2 stops. Checked on Transitous on 10-31, 13:50–13:52.
Evening at boulderbar Hbf instead: skip the team competition, close to Hbf
Choose this one if you do not want to join the team competition, or if you are tired. The afternoon is the same as the recommended plan (ending at Peterskirche); then take U1 back to the Hbf area. boulderbar Hbf (Central Station branch) has no event today, is open Saturday 09:00–22:00, student price €13.10; after climbing, walk about 10′ to Hbf, which is the easiest way to get to the airport.

Address Schloßgasse 10-12 (also written Schlossgasse), 1050 Wien; about 5′ walk from U4 Pilgramgasse. The official homepage says "1400m² Grundfläche", which is floor area; the boulderbar Hannovergasse site gives about 1300 m² of climbing area (Kletterfläche), so the two figures are not the same kind of measure; the research sheet gives Hannovergasse a floor area of about 1200 m², and by floor area Blockfabrik (1400 m²) is bigger than it. For the boulderbar at Hbf the research sheet only gives about 1300 m² of wall plus 200 m² outdoors; floor area not found. From Naschmarkt 59A at 13:12 → Margaretenplatz 13:16, then 5′ walk; return 13A at 18:37 Leibenfrostgasse → Hbf 18:44 (Transitous, looked up 10-30 23:34). 10-31 Team Spirit Halloween Edition (event page, read 10-31 11:3x): sign up at the front desk 17:30–17:45, starts 18:00; sign-ups are put into random teams of up to 5; people in Halloween costume are placed first and earn their team 5 points; with more than 50 people there are 10 teams; each team climbs 5 routes in each of 5 zones, 10 minutes per zone; each person picks a difficulty level (1: 5A–5C, 2: 5C–6A+, 3: 6A+–6B+, 4: 6B+–6C+, 5: 6C+–7A+); prizes are sponsored by Wild Country, Ottakringer and Sens, and the other sign-ups enter a raffle. The event page does not say whether signing up costs extra, whether people not in the contest can climb as usual, or when it ends. The official gym page says "Ca. 1300 m² Kletterfläche" (climbing surface, not floor area; the research table gives floor area about 1200 m², including about 120 m² outdoors, wall height up to 4.5 m); on 10-31 there is the "Team Spirit Halloween Edition" event, and the route-setting day (Schraubtag) is also moved to 31.10, so some walls will be closed. The student price needs a student card (ISIC is not required); the gym page lists "Team Spirit Halloween Edition 2026", but the event page (boulderbar.net/events/team-spirit-halloween-edition-2026/, read 10-31 11:3x) says this one is at Hannovergasse, and the picture caption on the gym page also says "in der Hannovergasse", so this branch has no event on 10-31 (when I read the gym page on 10-30 I mistakenly thought both had it); shoe rental and showers are not on the gym page (the price page gives adult shoe rental €4.50; I bring my own shoes so I won't rent). 0 Xiaohongshu (RedNote) posts; from the research table

Notes for this day

The last day should be relaxed: on 10-31 at 13:48 the user said that the two climbing gyms should not make them walk that much, that at the gyms the main thing is resting, and that saving money should not be judged by money alone; at 13:51 the 24-hour ticket was bought (D-75). Recommended: in the afternoon climb a while and rest a while at Blockfabrik (big bouldering gym in the 5th district) → at 15:40 take the metro to Stephansplatz and see Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral) and Peterskirche (St. Peter's Church) → at 16:50 take the metro and tram to boulderbar Hannovergasse, sign up for the Halloween team competition at 17:30–17:45, it starts at 18:00, stay until 21:45 → arrive at Hbf at 22:13 to buy the supplement and food → 22:42 Railjet to the airport for the night. Two other plans: skip the churches (stay at Blockfabrik until 16:35, U4 straight through); or go to boulderbar Hbf in the evening (no event, close to Hbf). The D-74 version with daytime walking, a full-trip ticket in the evening and four churches was replaced by this one at 13:54.

The research sheet says the gym has a vegetarian snack bar and a green courtyard (unchecked). Closes at 22:00 on Sat 10-31.

0 Xiaohongshu posts; from the research table

RecommendedMust-seeMe Vienna Central Station (luggage storage, groceries)

Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Central Station): buy the airport-section supplement, buy food at INTERSPAR-pronto
Admission Adults Lockers: the regular locker table (24 hours) on the ÖBB site gives small €2.00, medium €2.50, large €3.50, extra large €4.50, but for Vienna that table lists only Westbahnhof, Meidling and Praterstern, not Hauptbahnhof; Hauptbahnhof appears only in the "multifunctional lockers" list, and the price is shown during the booking process.
Details

Open Lockers can be used during station opening hours; INTERSPAR-pronto (the small Spar shop) is open 06:00–23:00 every day (three third-party sources agree: visitingvienna, weekend.at, vienna.at; not checked on the Spar site; the large Interspar may be closed on Sundays); the official page does not give locker hours; the old database says usable during station opening hours.

Note The old database's Hbf prices, S 3 h €2.20 / 24 h €2.70 and L 3 h €3.30 / 24 h €4.30, come from heute.at (2026-05-18) and were not rechecked on the official site this time; they may be the multifunctional locker prices. The two sources disagree, so go by the screen at the station.

There is no BILLA in the station; the IC to Bad Ischl and the REX 7 to the airport both leave from here (since 2026-09-07 the S7 no longer enters the city; for the airport take the REX 7 or a Railjet from here, wien.info read 10-31); Som Kitchen (Thai food) is on the ground floor; the lower level (UG) has about 650–670 digital lockers (Tamburi), keyless; contactless card payment only; you can book ahead on the Tamburi site or on the spot, and the pickup code is sent by e-mail. Sizes differ in one dimension only: S 12, M 23, L 47, XL 71, XXL 89, 3XL 214 cm; the other two dimensions are 41 × 62 cm. Two small cabin bags fit in one XL, or in two L. The official site does not say the maximum storage time. There is no staffed luggage storage in the station; if the lockers are full, use a nearby Stasher partner (Schweizer Garden hotel, about 5′ walk, 24 h)

Must-seeMe Vienna Airport (early flight on 11-01, overnight here the night before)

Flughafen Wien (Vienna Airport): take the 22:42 Railjet there, overnight at the airport
Details

Rain OK to go

For 10-31 I recommend spending the night at the airport (the user said so 10-30 19:12, D-71); the alternative if we don't sleep at the airport is at the end of this entry and in "Heads-up for tomorrow" on the 10-31 day page. From Hbf the REX takes about 22 minutes; in the ÖBB Tickets app, Wien → Flughafen Wien for the whole trip is about €5.50 (including the Vienna city section); with a valid Vienna city ticket you only pay about €2.30 for the airport section (price from wien.info, the page has no date, not checked on the ÖBB site). D-74's "buy a Friedensbrücke → airport full-trip ticket in the evening" was replaced by D-75: the user already bought a 24-hour ticket on 10-31 at 13:51. Since 2026-09-07 the S7 only runs to St. Marx and does not stop at Wien Mitte or Rennweg; REX 7 and Railjet still run Hbf ↔ airport as usual (Railjet twice an hour, about 15 minutes); until 2027-10-31 the CAT is replaced by a bus between Wien Mitte and the airport (wien.info "Important information for airport travellers from September 2026", read 10-31 11:3x). Actual plan for 10-31 (D-75): the user said at 13:51 that a 24-hour ticket is already bought (€9.70, valid until about 13:50 on 11-01), so for the airport we only add the "airport → Vienna city boundary" section, €2.30 (wien.info: people with a multi-day ticket or the Vienna City Card only add this section; the FAQ on the same page says the €5.50 full-trip ticket also covers the Railjet). Recommended: 22:42 Railjet (RJX 19959) → 22:57; 22:53 REX 22779 → 23:15; last 23:53 REX → 00:15 (Transitous, checked 10-31 13:50). If we miss all the trains: the VAB 1 airport bus (Vienna Airport Lines) runs all night from Wien Hauptbahnhof Süd (south side of the Central Station), 23:15 → 23:40, and on 11-01 03:15 → 03:40 and 03:45 → 04:10 (Transitous, checked 10-31 13:50; wien.info says toward the airport every half hour 03:00–00:00 and hourly 00:30–02:30); it does not accept the Vienna city ticket, one way about €11 (third party, the official price was not found). On Saturday night the U1 runs all night (the same search showed a 03:22 U1). Overnight stay: no curfew, the public areas of the terminal are open 24 hours, and people staying overnight are generally not sent away; these are all third-party claims (sleepinginairports.net, layoverindex), and I found no clear statement on the airport's official site. Airport press release (2021–2022): 16 Zzzleepandgo sleeping pods on the 2nd floor of T3 before security (landside), €9 per hour, from €48 for a whole night, booked at zzzleepandgo.com; the current price was not found. Hotels next to the airport are expensive. 11-01 flight 07:45: Ryanair online check-in is open until 2 hours before departure (05:45); after that, check-in at the desk only, for an extra fee. Non-EU/EEA passport holders must first get a stamp at the Ryanair Visa/Document check desk before security; without the stamp you cannot board and there is no refund; the desk opens at least 2 hours before departure and closes 40 minutes before departure (07:05); some nationalities can do the passport verification in the app during check-in and then skip the desk (Ryanair help center, from a WebSearch summary in the main session 10-31 13:5x; the official page returned 403 and was not read directly). Gate closes 07:15 (old record, not rechecked). Terminal: a third party says Ryanair checks in at T1, with security and boarding at T3 (a 2021 claim, aviation.direct); go by the boarding pass in the Ryanair app. Alternative if we don't sleep at the airport: sleep in a bed in the city, then take the 04:22 REX Wien Hbf → arrives at the airport 04:45 on 11-01, or the 03:45 VAB 1 Wien Hbf Süd → 04:10 (Transitous, checked 10-30 19:4x).

Checked: 2026-10-31 airport route changes (wien.info); 2026-10-30 overnight information (third party, main session search 19:4x); 2026-10-18 store (V-025, V-027)

What if it rains

  • Open-Meteo 10-31 13:5x: 14:00–18:00 rain probability 70–88%, but hourly rainfall is only 0–0.1 mm, at most drizzle; after 19:00 it drops below 45%; temperature 10–11 °C. Every leg today goes by public transport, the longest walk is about 7′ (tram stop to Hannovergasse), and both gyms and the churches are indoors, so no change is needed.

Heads-up for tomorrow

  • 11-01 07:45 flight Vienna → Stockholm, booked and paid, only a personal item. For online check-in, document check, gate, terminal and overnight, see items 5–8 of "Fixed point".
  • Hotels by the airport are expensive, not planned.
  • If you do not want to sleep at the airport: sleep in a bed in the city (you would have to book it yourself, price not checked), then on 11-01 at 03:15 or 03:45 take the VAB 1 airport bus (Wien Hauptbahnhof Süd → 03:40 / 04:10), or the 04:22 REX Wien Hbf → 04:45 (checked on Transitous on 10-30 at 19:4x). The upside is a few hours lying flat; the cost is one more night's bed and getting up shortly after 03:00, and if you miss it only a taxi is left.
