Splitting up and regrouping

  • The whole group walks together. Anyone who doesn't want to climb the basilica waits at a café on the square, and we meet at the basilica entrance at 15:50.
  • If the dinner starts at 18:00: skip the hotel after Heroes' Square and go straight to the venue. Take the 20E at 17:19 to Keleti, change to the M2 to Puskás Ferenc Stadion, then change to the 10E, arriving 17:45 (checked on Transitous 10-25).

Transport

  • Hotel → Fisherman's Bastion: tram 1, then M2 08:16 Puskás Ferenc Stadion → Batthyány tér 08:27, walk 13′, arrive 08:40 (checked on Transitous 10-22).
  • Castle District → Gravity: walk about 18′ down via the Vienna Gate; or bus 16A 10:18 Szentháromság tér → Széll Kálmán tér 10:21, walk 7′ (checked on Transitous 10-25).
  • Gravity → Horgásztanya: walk 5′ to Széll Kálmán tér, M2 12:44 → Batthyány tér 12:46, walk 8′, arrive 12:54; the next M2 is 12:49. Walking all the way takes 21′ (checked on Transitous 10-25).
  • Horgásztanya → St. Stephen's Basilica: walk about 23′, south along Fő utca and across the Chain Bridge (checked on Transitous 10-25).
  • If going to Mama Goulash instead: from Gravity walk 2′ to Széna tér, tram 4 or 6 at 12:39 → Király utca / Erzsébet körút 12:51, walk 10′, arrive 13:01; after the meal walk 12′ to the basilica, so leaving at 14:25 is fine. This way you skip the Chain Bridge (checked on Transitous 10-25).
  • Basilica → Heroes' Square: M1 15:59 Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út → Hősök tere 16:05, the next one is 16:02 (checked on Transitous 10-25).
  • Heroes' Square → hotel: M1 17:20 → Mexikói út 17:23, then tram 1 back (checked on Transitous 10-25).
  • Hotel → venue: tram 1 → Puskás Ferenc Stadion M, change to the 10E at 18:35 → Hungexpo, Kongresszusi Központ 18:45; or tram 37A 18:31 → Kőbánya felső 18:38, walk 11′ (checked on Transitous 10-25).
  • Venue → hotel (after the dinner): from the venue walk 10′ to Kőbánya felső, then tram 37A; or take the 10E to Puskás Ferenc Stadion and change to tram 1, about 19′ (searching from 22:00 gives two departures, 22:05 and 22:11; checked on Transitous 10-25). Walking all the way takes 41′, not recommended.
  • Tickets: the morning and midday trips are all covered by the 24-hour ticket bought on 10-25 (mine expires around 14:10; Companions' tickets expire at the time each of them first boarded on 10-25). After it expires, buy a second 24-hour ticket: I still need the M1, the ride back to the hotel, the ride to the venue, the ride back to the hotel after the dinner, and the ride to Keleti on the morning of 10-27. Paying per trip comes to about 2,800 Ft, while the second ticket is 2,750 Ft and you don't have to buy for every trip. Prices are under "Transport costs for this day" below.

From morning to night, one column per track for each plan, side by side for comparison. Block height roughly follows duration; when the text does not fit, the block grows taller and the times below move down, so read the hour marks and the times written on the blocks, not the lengths. Blocks with a solid border are fixed (on the timetable or booked); most of the rest are estimates. Click a block for details.

Recommended: bouldering in the morning, basilica and Heroes' Square in the afternoon, back to the hotel in the evening and then to the venue
Following the order you gave: after Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church, stroll the northern part of the Castle District, then go down to Gravity for about 2 h of bouldering (before 15:00 is the cheaper rate); lunch at Horgásztanya by the Buda riverside for Hungarian food (recommended on Xiaohongshu (RedNote), about €12–24 for one dish per person); after the meal walk along the river over the Chain Bridge to Pest, go up St. Stephen's Basilica, and ride the old M1 metro to Heroes' Square for the sunset (16:38); Then back at the hotel to rest and change, and on to the dinner at the venue. Rain OK to go

On the 3rd floor of the Mammut 1 mall (Lövőház u. 2-6), 5–6′ walk from Széll Kálmán tér station. On the morning of 10-26 all 4 of us boulder here (10:40–12:30, after Fisherman's Bastion and before lunch, decision D-54); before 15:00 is the cheaper rate. Whether a non-ISIC student card gets the student price has not been checked

RecommendedTop pickEither way Horgásztanya old restaurant (fish soup, beef stew)

Xiaohongshu: "Highly recommended: the fish soup here is great ... the beef stew is also very good", an old place a Hungarian friend took the poster to; on the Buda riverside, on the way to the Chain Bridge. One dish per person is about €12–24; Xiaohongshu says "if you don't eat a lot, adding one dessert is actually enough", fish soup plus dessert about €21–26; soup plus main about €33, which is over budget. None include drinks. It is busy at mealtimes, so reserving is recommended

The coordinates are Heroes' Square; Andrássy Avenue runs from the Opera House (47.5029, 19.0582) all the way here, about 2 km. On Mon 10-26 the Museum of Fine Arts next to it is probably closed; if you only walk the stretch from the Opera House to Oktogon, you do not need to go to Heroes' Square

Youth ticket Under 6 free; family tickets have their own prices (non-EEA family ticket, child 5,600 Ft)

Notes The prices come from the price list valid from 2026-01-01, but they were only read on third-party sites (ticketlens.com and budabestlife.com, which agree); the price page on the official site has a CAPTCHA and was not read. There are Chinese audio guides; D-07 records "not visiting Parliament" (it is not clear whether the original statement covers only 10-25 or the whole trip), and the recommendation is to see only the outside. What if it rains

  • Fisherman's Bastion and the Castle District are shortened; Gravity, lunch and the basilica are all indoors. For the stretch to the Chain Bridge, take transport instead: M2 from Batthyány tér to Deák Ferenc tér, then walk 4′ to the basilica.
  • No Heroes' Square in the afternoon: after the basilica take the M1 to Opera, see the outside and the lobby of the opera house (Hungarian State Opera (tour)), then go back to the hotel.

Heads-up for tomorrow

  • Leave the hotel: tram 1 → bus 80 at 07:41, arrive next to Keleti station at 07:47, walk 5′; the 08:30 EC 140 is already bought. The second 24-hour ticket bought on the afternoon of 10-26 is still valid then; if you didn't buy it, buy one 30-minute ticket (600 Ft), valid for both tram 1 and bus 80.
  • Pack tonight; book the 12:00 timed ticket for Upper Belvedere. No need to reserve a locker: store the bags on the spot tomorrow on the lower level of Wien Hbf (Tamburi lockers, contactless bank cards only).
  • On 10-27 we go back to Bad Ischl on the 16:57 train (fixed, decision D-44); tickets for 4 people are already bought (decision D-47).

Transport costs for this day

Costs per person; the data comes from the "Tickets and reservations" page and is not written separately here. Buses, metro, trains and boats count as transport; cable cars and sight admissions do not. Walking costs nothing and is not listed.
