Splitting up and regrouping

  • The whole group walks together. I haven't checked whether the two churches on Rennweg can be entered, so see them as an exterior on the way; anyone who doesn't want to can stay longer in the Belvedere garden, and we meet at the Gardekirche entrance at 14:15.
  • Leave Naschmarkt at 15:42, back at Hbf at 16:03 to pick up the suitcases, then buy tonight's and tomorrow morning's food at the Interspar in the station, with 37 min to spare.

Transport

  • Hotel → Keleti: tram 1, then bus 80 at 07:41, arrive 07:47, walk 5′ → 07:52 (checked on Transitous 10-22).
  • Outbound: EC 140 Budapest-Keleti 08:30 → Wien Hbf 11:20, direct (already bought).
  • Storing the suitcases: digital lockers on the lower level of Hbf, one XL compartment holds the two small suitcases (or two L compartments, one each); contactless bank cards only; store on the spot, no reservation (if they are full, see the "Tickets and reservations" page).
  • Hbf → Upper Belvedere: tram 18 11:44 → 11:47 + walk 9′, or walk 15′. Belvedere → Rennweg through the garden: walk 11′; the two churches on Rennweg are a 5′ walk apart; Gardekirche → Karlskirche walk 9′; Karlskirche → Naschmarkt walk 12′; Naschmarkt → Hbf: walk 11′ + U1 + walk 6′, about 21′.
  • All departures from Wien Hbf to Bad Ischl from the afternoon to the evening of 10-27 (checked on Transitous 10-22; "Changes" means the number of transfers; SV170 is the replacement bus from Gmunden to Bad Ischl, the railway is closed until 11/2; 150 is the ordinary regional bus from Salzburg to Bad Ischl, about 75′):

Timeline for the day

From morning to night, one column per track for each plan, side by side for comparison. Block height roughly follows duration; when the text does not fit, the block grows taller and the times below move down, so read the hour marks and the times written on the blocks, not the lengths. Blocks with a solid border are fixed (on the timetable or booked); most of the rest are estimates. Click a block for details.

ActivityTransitEatBufferFixed pointReserved Fixed: on the timetable, or already bookedEst.: estimated stay or walking timeTBD: not known yet, a slot is held
Recommended: leave at 16:57, arrive in Bad Ischl at 20:00
Belvedere at 12:00 + the two small churches on Rennweg + the Karlskirche exterior + lunch at Naschmarkt, about 1 h more than with the 15:57 train; take IC 742 at 16:57, arrive in Bad Ischl at 20:00, and then go on to the lodging. The closest to your "5 o'clock or 4:50" is this train (there is no 16:50 train from Hbf)
Earlier option: leaves 15:57, arrives 19:00
About 1 h less than the recommended plan: skip the Karlskirche exterior and Naschmarkt, and have lunch at Öfferl or Hbf; arrive in Bad Ischl at 19:00, and since tomorrow needs an early start, arriving early means a better sleep
Later option: leaves 17:57, arrives 21:21
About 1 h more again: after lunch at Naschmarkt add the Secession Building (Klimt's Beethoven Frieze) and cake at Café Sperl; take IC 744 at 17:57, arrive in Bad Ischl at 21:21, then on to the lodging, with dinner bought at Hbf and eaten on the train. Too late: not recommended, but it is the latest train on this route that is still comfortable

Notes The student price is marked "under 26"; the original official page could not be read, and the site does not say whether ISIC is accepted, so show a student card on site. A search snippet says free under 19, also with ID. Whether the official site forces you to book a timed ticket online was not found; a third party says there are time slots, the official snippet does not mention it. Youth ticket Teens €5; free for ages 10 and under

Combo ticket No combo ticket. Admission includes the church model, the panoramic platform (Altane), the treasury, the organ and an audio guide

Notes The website does not give a student age limit or say whether ID is needed. It lists no separate price for the dome lift: the platform is reached through the organ gallery, and a third party says it is included in admission. The website does not say "free during the Mass after 18:00": it only gives Mass Mon–Sat at 18:00 and ticketed visiting hours 09:00–18:00, and says nothing about free entry during Mass; attending Mass does not mean you can sightsee. Do not plan around this claim.

Rain OK to go

About 11′ walk from Naschmarkt; Xiaohongshu says entry is free during the Mass after 18:00, but the official site does not say this and only gives ticketed visiting hours 09:00–18:00, so go inside before 18:00 (student €6); after 18:00 look at the exterior and the pool at night. In the pool in front is Henry Moore's Hill Arches (a bronze arch sculpture installed in 1978). The "church with the Möbius strip" the user mentioned is not this one, it is the Votivkirche (Q-09 closed, D-70). I came on 10-27 (the user said so on 10-30 at 19:12)

Notes for this day

Take EC 140 in the morning to Vienna, store the suitcases and go to Upper Belvedere (12:00 timed ticket), then see the two small churches on Rennweg next door, pass the Karlskirche for its exterior, have lunch at Naschmarkt, take IC 742 at 16:57 to Bad Ischl, arriving at 20:00. This leaves about 1 h more than the earlier 15:57 train. The latest train you asked about: the last one that reaches Bad Ischl the same day is IC 840 leaving Hbf at 20:57, arriving only at 00:21 the next day, not recommended. Hbf shows no "16:50" train; the closest is this one. This train is fixed (decision D-44).

What if it rains

  • The Belvedere is indoors, so it goes ahead as usual; the Rennweg churches and the Karlskirche are exteriors only, skip them if it rains; from 13:30 take tram 18 back to near Hbf, eat at Interspar, and swap Naschmarkt for Café Sperl (indoors).

Heads-up for tomorrow

  • 10-28 Wed to Wolfgangsee: take bus 150 at Bad Ischl station at 09:24; 10-29 Thu to Gosausee and the Hallstatt blue hour, which is tighter: leave early and take bus 541 in Bad Ischl (follow the 10-28 and 10-29 day pages). The two days can be swapped depending on the weather (decision D-45).
  • School holidays (10-27 to 11-02): the day before, check the 10-28 and 10-29 buses again on ÖBB Scotty / OÖVV.
  • Tonight check the forecast for 10-28 and 10-29 (Wolfgangsee, Gosausee, Hallstatt); I bring a headlamp (for the evening of 10-29).

Transport costs for this day
