Splitting up and regrouping

  • The whole group is together during the day, no splitting.
  • After arriving back at Bad Ischl station at 19:08 we split up: I walk about 26′ to K³, leave before 22:00, and go back to the lodging; Companions go back to the lodging to soak in the thermal baths or rest.
  • Dinner for all 4 in St. Gilgen (no cooking today, D-18 changed one meal); I ate before the bouldering.
  • Tomorrow is an early start (Gosausee), so don't let the bouldering run past 22:00.

Transport

  • Outbound: lodging → Bad Ischl station; bus 150 09:24 → Strobl 09:43, wait 16′, change to 546 09:59 → St. Wolfgang Markt 10:09 (checked on Transitous 10-23 for Wed 10-28; Thursday is the same). Not taking the 08:12 direct bus: it arrives at 08:38 and you would wait 2 h 27 min in St. Wolfgang.
  • Boat (official Herbstfahrplan PDF, checked against the chart on 10-22): St. Wolfgang Markt → Ried-Falkenstein → Fürberg → St. Gilgen: 11:05 → 11:20 → 11:37 → 11:45, 14:05 → 14:20 → 14:37 → 14:45, 17:00 → 17:20 → 17:37 → 17:45. These three sailings run whatever the weather; the 09:32, 12:35, 15:35 and 18:15 sailings are marked 'only after an announcement' in the timetable, so don't count on them. In the other direction (St. Gilgen → St. Wolfgang Markt) the sure ones are 09:20 → 10:00, 12:00 → 12:45, 15:00 → 15:45, 18:00 → 18:43 (this one ends its day at St. Wolfgang); the 10:20, 13:30 and 16:30 wait for an announcement.
  • One-way fares (official price list from 2026-02-01, the table is the 2025-09 edition): Markt → Fürberg €11.80, → St. Gilgen €11.80; Fürberg → St. Gilgen €6.00. No student price.
  • Cable car: Zwölferhorn 4/1–11/1 daily 09:00–17:00, closed for maintenance 11/2–11/19; round trip adult €36, student and youth discount €32 (show ID; whether ISIC is accepted is unchecked). The official site doesn't say when the last descent is; be down before 16:00. From the summit walk 10′ to the cross for the view of the lake.
  • How far the valley station is from the St. Gilgen bus stop: the sources say 5′, 1.25 km and 32′; I estimate 15′, check the map when you get there.
  • Return: bus 150 St. Gilgen 18:34 → Bad Ischl 19:08 (checked on Transitous 10-23); every 30′ (at :04 and :34; there is also an EILKURS at 18:10 → 18:37). Rainy-day version 13:08 → 13:45, 13:38 → 14:15, 14:38 → 15:15, 15:08 → 15:45. Bus 546 direct from St. Wolfgang to Bad Ischl: 12:32, 13:15, 15:15, 17:15 (32′). K³ is a 26′ walk from the train station (Transitous).
  • Re-check the services on ÖBB Scotty / OÖVV the day before leaving.

Timeline for the day

From morning to night, one column per track for each plan, side by side for comparison. Block height roughly follows duration; when the text does not fit, the block grows taller and the times below move down, so read the hour marks and the times written on the blocks, not the lengths. Blocks with a solid border are fixed (on the timetable or booked); most of the rest are estimates. Click a block for details.

ActivityTransitEatBufferFixed pointReserved Fixed: on the timetable, or already bookedEst.: estimated stay or walking timeTBD: not known yet, a slot is held
What actually happened today (rescheduled at 11:18, lunch already eaten): first to St. Wolfgang to see the church and walk along the lake, boat to St. Gilgen at 14:05, back to Bad Ischl at 15:08, bouldering for 4, then hotpot back at the lodging
Changed on the morning of 10-28 (decision D-59): no cable car, boat only, back before the rain. We left too late to make the 12:00 boat from St. Gilgen, so we go to St. Wolfgang first and take the 14:05 boat. Forecast (Open-Meteo 11:12): mostly dry until 14:00, light rain from 15:00, almost certainly rain after 16:00. If the rain comes early and heavy: skip the boat and take the 15:15 bus 546 from St. Wolfgang direct to Bad Ischl, arriving 15:47. Tickets: before boarding, choose "OÖVV Leisure Ticket" in the OÖVV app and buy 2, or tell the driver "Zwei Freizeit-Tickets, bitte".
Original plan (dropped on the morning of 10-28): St. Wolfgang → boat to Fürberg → walk the lakeshore to St. Gilgen → cable car → dinner by the lake → back for bouldering
Leave at 09:24; church, the Fürberg lakeshore path, St. Gilgen lakeside and dinner; back on the 18:34, arriving in Bad Ischl at 19:08, I go to K³ (before 22:00) and then go back to the lodging. The forecast has showers from 13:00: check the sky when you reach St. Gilgen, and if it looks bad switch to the second plan.
Rain or fog: no cable car, the boat still runs, lunch in St. Gilgen, back to Bad Ischl early in the afternoon
The forecast for 10-28 has showers from the afternoon and heavier rain at night. The morning is the same as the recommended plan (church, café, boat direct to St. Gilgen, no rain inside the cabin); after lunch at Zur Post take the 13:38 bus 150 back, arriving in Bad Ischl at 14:15; Companions go to the Kaiservilla and then the thermal baths, and I go bouldering at K³ after it opens at 15:00.

Open Mon–Fri 15–22; Sat, Sun and public holidays 10–20 (10-18 store, old); 10-27 to 11-02 are school holidays, so holiday hours may apply — check the official site's pretix page before going; official opening-hours page (marked "ab 15.9.2023", rather old): Mon–Fri 15:00–22:00; Sat, Sun and public holidays 10:00–20:00. 10-28 (Wed) and 10-29 (Thu) 15–22, 10-31 (Sat) 10–20, worked out from this page; the page does not say whether there are special closures at the end of October, nor mention maintenance, so check the official site or call before going.

Youth ticket Ages 15–17 €11.50 (€10.00 with an Alpenverein or similar card)

Combo ticket Klettern & Therme combo: K³ climbing gym + 4 hours at Salzkammergut-Therme, €34.00 (sold only at the Therme ticket desk; the website gives one flat price, not split into adult/student). For comparison: student K³ €11.50 + Therme 4 hours on a weekday €31.50 = €43.00, so the combo saves about €9. If you plan to both boulder and soak in the spa, use the combo

Notes Matches the old database (student €11.50). Shoe rental €4.00, rope €5.00, only available during bar opening hours; the website says online tickets let you in outside opening hours. The price list says "gültig ab 01. Dezember 2025". ISIC: the website does not mention ISIC; it says students need ID.

There are three different claims about the distance from the valley station to the St. Gilgen bus stop: a Xiaohongshu blogger says "about 5′ on foot", the place database coordinates give 1.25 km in a straight line, Transitous says 32′; check the map when you get there; about 10′ going up (Salzburg Errand Hero); the summit has a viewing platform, a cross (10′ walk), a deer sculpture and a paragliding launch point; Whispered Words: half an hour is enough at the summit, and after coming down St. Gilgen is very quiet with little commercial activity; grass skiing closed on 10-05

Notes for this day

10-28 change (decision D-59): No cable car. Rescheduled at 11:18 (lunch already eaten): first a walk by the river in Bad Ischl, then the 546 at 12:12 to St. Wolfgang for the church and a walk along the lake, boat to St. Gilgen at 14:05, the 150 back at 15:08, arriving in Bad Ischl at 15:45; 4 people go bouldering at K³ until 17:45, buy groceries at EUROSPAR before 18:45, then back at the lodging to cook hotpot. The original one-sentence plan below is kept for reference.

A full day on Wolfgangsee, with the return to Bad Ischl pushed back until after dinner: in the morning, the pilgrimage church and Pacher Altar in St. Wolfgang, the White Horse Inn and the lakeside; the 11:05 boat to Fürberg, then a 25′ walk along the flat lakeside path to St. Gilgen; lunch at Zur Post at midday; the Zwölferhorn cable car in the afternoon; after coming down, the lakeside and the outside of the Mozart house; dinner in St. Gilgen, the 150 back at 18:34, arriving in Bad Ischl at 19:08; then I go bouldering at K³ while the companions soak in the thermal baths or rest. No hiking this day; the 25′ along the lake is flat. The boat still runs, and the cable car runs until 11/1. The forecast shows showers from the afternoon and heavier rain at night (see "What if it rains"); check the sky when you reach St. Gilgen, and in rain or fog use Plan B (no cable car, back at 13:38). The two days can be swapped depending on the weather: the evening before, look at the forecasts for 10-28 and 10-29 and pick the clear day for the hike.

Whether the summit restaurant is open at the end of October was not verified; (added) opinions are mixed: a Xiaohongshu blogger "unbeatably beautiful! Pick a sunny day", Jiaozi "top class"; Ximalaya Shan "asked a local, who said the little train is not really worth it"; Xiaohongshu says round trip €40, the official site €61; (10-22) when only one cable car is recommended, this one is not chosen: the price is about double Zwölferhorn, there is no student price, only the fixed A trains are guaranteed to run, and at 1,783 m the summit has a higher risk of snow and fog

Student ticket No student price (the official site only has adults from age 16 and children and youth ages 3–15; the other discounts are for disability, over-60s on Mondays, and the family card)

Note The conflict in the old database is resolved: the official 4-hour ticket is €31.50 on weekdays/€32.50 on weekends; the Xiaohongshu price of €34 matches the weekday all-day price of €34.00 (or the climbing combo ticket at €34). 10-26 is the Austrian national holiday, so the "holiday" price applies; 10-28 (Wed), 10-29 (Thu) and 10-30 (Fri) are at the weekday price, unless they count as "österr. Ferien" (the official site does not say which days); this is not stated on the official site and was not found. Towel €8.50, bathrobe €10.50. What if it rains

  • Forecast (met.no/yr.no, issued 10-22 21:17, queried 10-23 00:00; 5–6 days ahead, medium-low reliability): around St. Wolfgang on 10-28, cloudy in the morning (about 0.1 mm from 06–12), showers of about 1.6 mm from 13–19, rain of about 3.2 mm after 19:00, temperatures 12–17 °C; the ECMWF model (Open-Meteo) gives about 0.9 mm in the afternoon; the GFS model has no rain all day, but lots of cloud. The three models disagree, so the timing and amount of rain are uncertain, but none of them predicts snow. Check again the evening before.
  • How to decide: check once at 09:24 before leaving, and again at 11:45 on reaching St. Gilgen. If the summit (Zwölferhorn station is at 1,522 m) is covered by cloud or it is raining: don't go up, use Plan B. If it is only light rain but the summit is visible: you can go up, keep the schedule for coming down (before 16:00). Zwölferhorn cable car phone; zwoelferhorn.at shows summit conditions, and bergfex has them too.
  • Plan B (rain version): the boat still runs — in the autumn timetable only the sailings marked "only after an announcement" depend on the weather; the 11:05, 14:05 and 17:00 do not, and you sit in the cabin out of the rain. The church is indoors; Café Wallner is open Wed; lunch at Zur Post (open Wed); the 13:38 150 back to Bad Ischl, arriving at 14:15. The companions go to the Kaiservilla (guided tour only, last tour 15:15, €24/students €22, no photos indoors) and then the thermal baths; I go to K³ after it opens at 15:00.
  • Indoor options (very few around St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen in October): the pilgrimage church; cafés; the Musikinstrumenten-Museum in St. Gilgen is "by appointment only" in Oct–Nov, the Mozarthaus can only be seen from outside, and the Zinkenbach painters' village is closed in Oct–Nov, so none of these are planned. Bad Ischl has the Kaiservilla, Zauner pastry shop, K³ and the thermal baths.
  • If the boat is cancelled: 546 11:32 → Strobl 11:41, change to 150 11:45 → St. Gilgen 11:59, 14′ later than the boat, saves €11.80 (no Fürberg lakeside path in that case).
  • The Fürberg lakeshore path can be walked in the rain, but it is slippery.
  • When swapping days (moving Wolfgangsee to Thu 10-29, or Gosausee to Wed 10-28): ①Zur Post in St. Gilgen is closed on Thu 10-29 (stated in the tourist office entry, 2026-09 version), Brunnwind is on holiday and See Cafe Brandl on winter break, so I found no restaurant confirmed open in St. Gilgen on Thursday — if you move it to Thursday, eat lunch in St. Wolfgang (Café Wallner is open Thursday) or bring your own, and cook dinner back in Bad Ischl; ②K³ is 15–22 on both Wed and Thu, no difference; ③the departures are the same on Wed and Thu (Transitous checked for both days); ④for dinner in Hallstatt see the 10-29 page (Bräugasthof is closed on Wed).

Heads-up for tomorrow

  • 10-29 (changed at 01:47, D-60): sleep until 9, take the 541 in Bad Ischl to Gosausee, walk the three lakes with all 4 of us; bring your own lunch, buy it at EUROSPAR before leaving.
  • Look at the 10-29 forecast: it says clearing during the day on 10-29, best in the afternoon, clear at night (Gosau point 05–11 °C, about 1–4 °C at night). If you want to swap, decide tonight.
  • Dress warmer on 10-29: Gosausee is at 930 m, about 6 °C in the morning, and the stretch by the back lake may be icy after a frosty night.

Transport costs for this day

Costs per person; the data comes from the "Tickets and reservations" page and is not written separately here. Buses, metro, trains and boats count as transport; cable cars and sight admissions do not. Walking costs nothing and is not listed.

  • Bad Ischl station → Strobl → St. Wolfgang (150, change to 546); in the evening St. Gilgen → Bad Ischl (150). Unlimited rides all day€13.25
Freizeit-Ticket OÖ (€26.50 per ticket, shared by 2 adults) · whole group · 4 people buy 2 tickets (€53.00 in total), 1 ticket per 2 people · buy on the spot · Tickets and reservations →
Valid from 09:00, so the 09:24 departure just works. Recommended default. Going further (e.g. the 150 to Fuschl, Plan C) costs nothing extra.
  • Boat St. Wolfgang Markt → Fürberg (rainy-day Plan B: direct to St. Gilgen, same price)€11.80
Wolfgangsee boat ticket (buy at the pier window or on board) · whole group · buy on the spot · Tickets and reservations →
No student price. Freizeit does not cover the boat. The full-lake ticket with a Salzkammergut Card is €29.40, not worth it when only one stretch is used this day.
Total (per person, excluding alternatives)
Me €25.05
Companions €25.05

Another way to buy, or alternatives

  • Single tickets for the same route: Bad Ischl station → St. Wolfgang Markt €6.20, St. Gilgen → Bad Ischl station €7.10€13.30
OÖVV single ticket · whole group · buy on the spot · Tickets and reservations →
Alternative: Another way to buy, not counted in the total
For 4 people the total is €53.20, €0.20 more than Freizeit's €53.00 (€0.05 more per person). The reason to pick it would be not having to pair up two people, which isn't needed this day. The single ticket price for Plan C (Fuschlsee) was not checked; Freizeit is not affected.

The Zwölferhorn cable car is an admission, not counted under transport; for the price see Tickets and reservations (not riding it on 10-28 anymore). The original Plan C (going to Fuschlsee after coming down) included the cable car and was deleted after the plan changed on the morning of 10-28; see the git history.
