Splitting up and regrouping

  • All day the 4 of us are together, no splitting (D-60).
  • If someone can't keep up: turn back together at Gosaulacke, or let the faster ones go on to the back lake while the rest wait at Gosaulacke (about 1 h 10 one way). I didn't check phone signal in the valley; agree on a turn-back time before splitting up.

Transport

School holidays (10-27 to 11-02) follow the winter timetable. The departures were checked on Transitous on 10-29 between 01:45 and 10:59 (Thursday, timetable, no real-time data); the 541 was about 9′ late in Bad Ischl (per the user).

Tickets: The 541 runs after 09:00, so the Freizeit-Ticket is valid. When boarding the 541, ask the driver for 2 ("Zwei Freizeit-Tickets, bitte"); one €26.50 ticket covers 2 adults, with unlimited rides from that day until 03:00 the next day, valid on the 541, 542, 543 and 544. Single tickets would cost about €20.80 per person (€10.40 there, the return estimated at the same price), about €83.20 for 4.

Hard time limits for this day:

# Which leg Cut-off time What if you miss it
1 Bad Ischl → Gosausee The 541 was boarded in Bad Ischl, about 9′ late, and rode to Gosaumühle; the 542 timetable departs 10:45 → Zwieselalmbahn 11:09 542 gone: take a taxi from Gosaumühle to Gasthof Gosausee (about 15 km, price not checked; Gosauer Taxi, Taxi Egger, or wait for the 11:45 → 12:09, and the next one after that is 12:32 → 12:56
2 Walking back from the back lake Plans A and B: latest 14:35 (to catch the 16:52); Plan C: 15:00, latest 15:30 (to catch the last bus at 17:47) If you haven't reached Gosaulacke by 13:00 (Plans A and B) or 14:00 (Plan C), turn back at Gosaulacke and take the 16:52
3 Front lake → Zwieselalmbahn stop Walk 24′ (1.7 km). For the 16:52 bus you must leave the front lake at 16:25; for the last bus at 17:47, at 17:20 After dark this section needs a flashlight; whether there are street lights not checked
4 Zwieselalmbahn → Bad Ischl 16:52 → Gosaumühle 17:17 → 541 back to Bad Ischl Last bus 17:47 → Steeg/Hallstätter See Traunbrücke 18:19 → 541 back to Bad Ischl; if you miss that too: walk 17′ to Hintertal Schmiedweg, 18:49 → Traunbrücke 19:19 → 541 back to Bad Ischl
  • Route: North end of the front lake → back lake and return 13.2 km (places table; AllTrails average 3 h 46, the sources say 4–4.5 h). Straight-line map distances: Gasthof Gosausee → Gosaulacke about 2.8 km, → back lake about 5.2 km (Nominatim, checked 10-29), so Gosaulacke is about halfway. Times are estimated for 4 people walking together: 2 h 05 out, 1 h 50 back.
  • Darkness: Calculated with astronomical formulas (47.56 N, 13.65 E) for 10-29, winter time CET: sunset 16:53; end of civil twilight 17:25 (after that you need a flashlight); end of nautical twilight 18:01 (cross-checked with the astral library). The valley is in shade from 15:30. Plans A and B are back at the stop at 16:49, still light; Plan C walks the stretch to the stop at 17:20–17:44, already dark.
  • Most opening hours come from official or tourist-office listings, not checked on site.

Timeline for the day

From morning to night, one column per track for each plan, side by side for comparison. Block height roughly follows duration; when the text does not fit, the block grows taller and the times below move down, so read the hour marks and the times written on the blocks, not the lengths. Blocks with a solid border are fixed (on the timetable or booked); most of the rest are estimates. Click a block for details.

Actual today ①: caught the 10:45 542 (it waited or was also late) → back at 16:52, not tied to the last bus
We boarded the 541 in Bad Ischl, about 9′ late (the user said so), and rode to Gosaumühle. The 542 leaves at 10:45; it is also a Postbus, so if it waited or was also late we can connect: arrive at Zwieselalmbahn at about 11:09–11:15, then follow the original plan: leave the front lake at 11:45, turn back from the back lake by 14:35 at the latest, be back at 16:52, and reach Bad Ischl; no last bus needed, and we are back at the stop before dark (sunset 16:53). If we miss it, see Plans B and C.
②: missed the 542, take a taxi from Gosaumühle to the lake → back at 16:52
When we reach Gosaumühle at 10:50 the 542 has already left: call a Gosau taxi at the stop and go straight to Gasthof Gosausee (about 15 km, est.), arriving at the lake at about 11:30, about 1 h earlier than waiting for the 11:45 bus, and it also saves the 24′ from the stop to the lake. After that, same as Plan A: turn back from the back lake by 14:35 at the latest, be back at 16:52. Phones: Gosauer Taxi (the directory says all day); Taxi Egger (tourist office directory, checked 10-29; numbers and prices are not verified, ask the price before getting in).
③: missed it and no taxi, the 11:45 542 → still walk all three lakes, back on the 17:47 last bus
Wait 55′ at Gosaumühle, take the 11:45 542, arriving at Zwieselalmbahn at 12:09, leave the front lake at 12:40, reach the back lake at about 14:45, start back at 15:00 (15:30 at the latest), be back at the front lake at about 16:45, walk to the stop with a flashlight from 17:20 (civil twilight ends at 17:25, so the last 24′ along the road is dark), take the last bus from this stop at 17:47, and reach the home area at 18:39. If we haven't reached Gosaulacke by 14:00, go only that far and take the 16:52 back.

Coordinates are for the front lake; the winter timetable of bus 542 (from 10/27) ends at Hintertal Zwieselalm, about 1.7 km and a 24′ walk from the stop to the front lake (Transitous; 23–42′ in the sources); the back-lake hut Hohe Holzmeisteralm closed at the end of September, so bring your own food; no winter maintenance, and the official site warns of rockfall; 10-29 all 4 of us leave by bus in the morning: turn around at the back lake by 14:35 at the latest and leave the front lake at 16:25 (D-60); my own words on 10-22: "the three lakes at Gosausee (Gosausee), I'm definitely going to hike all of them"

Notes for this day

We boarded the 541 in Bad Ischl, about 9′ late, and rode to Hallstatt Gosaumühle. Three ways to go, ordered from the most likely and best: ①if the 10:45 542 waited or is also late, we connect, reach Zwieselalmbahn at about 11:10, leave the front lake at 11:45, turn back from the back lake by 14:35 at the latest, be back at 16:52, and reach Bad Ischl, with no last bus and no walking in the dark; ②if the 542 has gone, take a taxi from Gosaumühle straight to the lake (arriving at about 11:30) and be back at 16:52 the same way; ③if no taxi, wait for the 11:45 542, arriving at 12:09, still walk the three lakes, start back from the back lake at 15:00 (15:30 at the latest), take the last bus at 17:47, with the last 24′ of road in the dark. To find the lake, search Google Maps for Gasthof Gosausee. Buy 2 Freizeit-Tickets from the driver when boarding. No cable car, no Hallstatt (D-60, D-62).

Alternatives by time slot

The first item in each slot is the recommended one; the others are swaps.

What if it rains

  • Forecast (Open-Meteo, queried 10-29 01:45, Gosausee 950 m point): no rain all day (precipitation probability ≤ 23%, 0 mm); around 11:00 it is 6–7 °C, 13–15 h 7–8 °C; cloud cover 89–100% from 10–12 h, about 65% at 13–14 h, fully overcast after 17:00; very little wind. Last night between 16 and 20 h there was about 3 mm of light rain and 5–6 °C by the lake overnight, so no ice, but the rocks and roots are wet.
  • If it really rains: go only as far as Gosaulacke and back, or just stroll around the front lake and shelter in Gasthof Gosausee; home at 16:52.

Heads-up for tomorrow

  • The companions return to Vienna on the morning of 10-30: leave the lodging and take the 150 at 09:24; check out before 10:00, two small suitcases.
  • I go hiking at Altaussee on 10-30 and return to Vienna that night (see the 10-30 day page): leave by bus from Bad Ischl; pack the backpack tonight, check out in the morning.
  • Where the 4 of us stay in Vienna on the night of 10-30 is not decided yet (Q-01).

Transport costs for this day

Costs per person; the data comes from the "Tickets and reservations" page and is not written separately here. Buses, metro, trains and boats count as transport; cable cars and sight admissions do not. Walking costs nothing and is not listed.

  • 541 (it was late) → 542 to Zwieselalmbahn; 16:52 542 → 541 back (or the last bus at 17:47). Unlimited rides all day€13.25
Freizeit-Ticket OÖ (€26.50 per ticket, shared by 2 adults) · whole group · 4 people buy 2 tickets (€53.00 in total), 1 ticket per 2 people · buy on the spot · Tickets and reservations →
Valid from 09:00, so the morning 541 works. Recommended default. Going to Hallstatt (Plan B) costs nothing extra.
Total (per person, excluding alternatives)
Me €13.25
Companions €13.25

Another way to buy, or alternatives

  • Single tickets for the same route: our stop in Bad Ischl → Hintertal Zwieselalmbahn €10.40 (541+542); Zwieselalmbahn → our stop in Bad Ischl estimated at the same price in reverse€20.80 (est.)
OÖVV single ticket · whole group · buy on the spot · Tickets and reservations →
Alternative: Another way to buy, not counted in the total
Outbound price read from the official OÖVV lookup on 10-24; the return was not checked separately. About €30 more than Freizeit (for 4 people), and going to Hallstatt would cost extra on top.

On 10-29 the plan changed to 4 people together (D-60); we actually boarded the delayed 541 (D-62); buying 2 Freizeit-Tickets is the cheapest. The taxi price for Plan B was not checked and is not counted in the transport costs. The Gosaukammbahn cable car is no longer planned. The original plan (10:21), the plan that only went to Gosaulacke and the Hallstatt-in-the-evening plan are in the git history.
